Most magicians do most things according to their websites, and they’re all competing for all the jobs. The best way to succeed is get rid of the competition and here are 5 ways to do it.

  1. Be the best in the world but make your world smaller - The impulse of magicians is to be all things to all men and by doing that you are increasing not only the size of your market but also the size of the competition. You should always strive to be the best in the world but you can define the world that matters to you as anything you want – “Magical Entertainer” is too broad. Be the best balloon guy, mind-reader, Trade Show worker, Table Magician, anything, just aim to be the best.
  2. Local Fame – Make your world even smaller. Be the best of whatever you choose but confine yourself to a geographical area, this will help with advertising, marketing and PR. Take over the world a bit at a time.
  3. Be first – You won’t have any competition if what you offer is new and unique to the people you’re pitching to.
  4. Become an expert – Position yourself as the person who knows everything about Kids Shows or Mind Reading , (in your world, remember), and then you’ll always be at the top of the list. Give talks, attend networking events, write articles etc.
  5. Give work away – have the competition work for you. Don’t take jobs that don’t fit your into your world, give them to your competition but make sure the client knows that it came from you.  Okay this doesn’t eliminate the competition but now they owe you and the client thinks they work for you – nice!
